Morrisons to Close Over 100 Cafes, Florists, Pharmacies and Stores in Major Restructuring Plan

Morrisons has announced plans to close more than 100 outlets and in-store services across the UK this year as part of a major shake-up of its operations, in what the company calls a “programme of renewal.”

The supermarket chain confirmed that it will shut 50 cafés, 17 Morrisons Daily convenience stores, 13 florists, four pharmacies, all 18 Market Kitchens, and around 70 meat and fish counters in 2025 — a move that marks another significant blow to the British high street.

Chief Executive Rami Baitiéh said the closures are a “necessary part of our plans to renew and reinvigorate Morrisons” and to refocus investment on “the areas that customers really value.”

Why Are the Closures Happening?

According to Morrisons, the decision is designed to optimise operations, accelerate growth, and offset rising costs driven by inflation, energy prices and government legislation.

“Consumers are feeling the squeeze and we are continuing to help customers make the most of stretched household budgets,” said Mr Baitiéh. “But we are also managing significant cost headwinds, some of which were unexpected.”

The supermarket recorded a £919 million loss last year, following £1.3 billion in losses in 2023, although it returned to a £2.1 billion pre-tax profit in the year ending October 2024.

Which Morrisons Cafés Are Closing?

Morrisons first announced plans to close 52 cafés across the UK in March, citing “specific local challenges.” While many cafés will remain open, a significant number have been earmarked for closure, including:

Selected Café Closures:

Bradford Thornbury · Paisley Falside Road · Portsmouth · London Queensbury · Glasgow Newlands · Solihull Warwick Road · London Harrow Hatch End · Leeds Horsforth · Troon Academy Street · Wishaw Kirk Road · Newcastle UT Cowgate · Bromsgrove Buntsford Industrial Park · East Kilbride Lindsayfield · Warminster Weymouth Street · Oxted Station Yard · Watford Ascot Road · and many more.

Mr Baitiéh added that in some stores, Morrisons will partner with third-party brands to replace closed cafés with “relevant specialist offers.

Market Kitchens and Florists Also Shutting Down

Morrisons’ Market Kitchen dining concept — which offered freshly prepared meals from multiple food counters — will close across all 18 UK locations, including:

Aberdeen · Basingstoke · Brentford · Camden Town · Cheltenham · Edgbaston · Gravesend · Leeds Kirkstall · Lincoln · Milton Keynes · Nottingham · Stoke · Tynemouth · and Verwood.

Additionally, 13 in-store florists will also close, including branches in Bradford, Canning Town, Sheffield, Sunderland, and St Helens, despite the company previously doubling florist staff numbers in 2020.

Pharmacies and Morrisons Daily Stores to Go

The chain will also shut four pharmacies — in Birmingham (Small Heath), Blackburn, Bradford, and London Wood Green — as part of the same cost-cutting plan.

Meanwhile, the 17 Morrisons Daily convenience stores that have closed or are set to close include locations in Bath, Exeter, Gorleston, Wokingham, Peebles, Tonbridge, Romsey, and Shenfield. Most of these stores ceased trading in April 2025.

Impact on Shoppers and Communities

Consumer advocates have voiced concern that the closures will reduce affordable dining and retail options for local shoppers.

Reena Sewraz of Which? told Metro:

“Supermarket cafés provide great value for families, especially with popular ‘kids eat free’ deals. Morrisons’ decision to close so many cafés will undoubtedly be a blow to local communities and limit choice for consumers.”

What’s Next for Morrisons?

Despite the closures, Morrisons insists it remains committed to investing in fresh food, value ranges, and online shopping improvements as part of its long-term growth strategy.

Mr Baitiéh emphasised:

“We’re focusing our investment in areas that can play a full part in our growth — ensuring Morrisons continues to offer good, affordable, fresh food for all.”
